i have been a practicing artist my entire life. i studied classical drawing and figurative oil painting, and i have spent years designing tools for reading maps and spatial data.

while my formal training focused on the techniques of the great masters and representational art, my own interests have pulled me toward a more direct practice, one where minimalism and functionality matter more than skill or technique.

i am fascinated by scale — the very small resolving into the very large — which led me to make work that rewards close inspection as well as viewing from across a room. i am also drawn to the resourcefulness of marks: the way a single mark can indicate so much more than itself. simplified to its most minimal point, that becomes one circle. a single mark, made in such a way that it contains multitudes.

my practice takes effort and patience along with taste and sensitivity, but none of that is virtuosity. i am the catalyst for the art, not the subject of it.

my favorite materials are charcoal — literal carbon — and water, the two materials human beings are made most of.
