from the circles collection:

i mix pulverized charcoal with water and wait for it to dry into a paste. i load the brush, place a single mark, and wait.

the water carries the charcoal around, and after a while it dries. that's it. i don't touch it while it's happening.

i do this over and over again until i find a circle with magic inside it. it's hard to predict and different every time. from across the room it's a circle. up close it's sediment, tide lines, laminar flow. the eye finds things in it like looking at clouds. vague divinations. calming. unobtrusive.

high contrast and fine detail yield the most the most intoxicating circles. the rest are discarded. there is little skill involved in this process, only sensitivity.

the previews here are 2,000 × 2,000 pixels, but the prints are made from the full 28,000 × 28,000 pixel scans.
